About Dr Peter Heffernan

While working as a Family Doctor, I became increasingly interested in the emotional lives of my patients to the point where I decided to specialise in Psychiatry. I have been a member of the Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists since 1992, and have continued my professional development in many aspects of Psychiatry, including Psychotherapy.

I am a long-standing member of the Victorian Association of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapists and a member of the United Kingdom Adult ADHD Network ( UKAAN)

I am experienced in the assessment and treatment of anxiety, depression, post traumatic stress disorder, chronic pain syndrome, bipolar disorder, alcoholism and the psychoses, and adulthood attention deficit disorder.

I have extensive experience in therapy with patients with family and relationship issues, grief and loss, childhood trauma, workplace physical and emotional injury, including PTSD, and Veterans psychiatry.

I live and work on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria, in private practice, and am         Consultant Psychiatrist and Psychotherapist with Southeastern and The Valley Private Hospitals based in Melbourne’s South-East.

I have a commitment to regional, rural and remote community mental health services.

My personal interests include travel through regional and remote Australia, family, a home orchard and tending the backyard chooks.
